BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a battle of two top national powerhouse NCAA Division II women's soccer programs, Western Washington University and Colorado School of Mines played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Harrington Field.

The Vikings and Orediggers each scored late second-half goals that proved to be the deciding factor in the tie scoreline. WWU netted an own goal in the 78th minute on a failed defensive clearance, and Mines scored in a similar fashion with under five minutes remaining in the 86th minute on a miscue by the Western backline.

Western heads into conference play with a 2-1-2 overall record, opening the 14-game GNAC slate with four consecutive home games at Harrington Field beginning next week hosting Northwest Nazarene on Thursday and Central Washington on Saturday (both 7 pm games).

Mines (4-1-1) held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal, while the Vikings offensive pressure resulted in 14 total shots compared to nine by the Orediggers.

WWU's go-ahead goal came at the 77:14 mark when sophomore forward Triya Mitchell crossed the ball into the box from the sideline, that was deflected off the Mines center back spinning into the back of the net for an own goal.

The Orediggers equalized at the 85:13 mark when a long over the top pass sprung forward Bella Campos into a goal-scoring opportunity. WWU had a chance to clear the ball at the top of the 18, but Campos gathered the loose ball finding midfielder Allyson Townsend for the open-net goal with under five minutes on the clock.

"We have grown a lot in these five non-conference games. We had some great stretches of defending today against a high-level opponent," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "We will keep working on our attacking-game execution and overall consistency as we head into conference play. Overall, a fair result today."

WWU is the two-time defending GNAC regular-season champions and will open the conference schedule with four consecutive home games at Harrington Field.
