FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Western Washington University volleyball team dropped a four-set match against No. 22 nationally ranked Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The Nanooks defeated the Vikings 24-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22 to improve to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in conference matches. WWU lost its third consecutive match – two in five sets – to fall to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in GNAC matches.
Senior pin hitter Delaney Speer led the Vikings recording her seventh double-double of the season (in 11 matches) with 11 kills and a season-high 26 digs. Senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl added nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage and had one block.
Western's defense was also bolstered by 21 digs from senior libero Finnley Claeys, 15 from sophomore defensive/serve specialist Chayse Flick-Williamsand 12 from freshman setter Maya Quitiquit (18 assists).
UAF was led by a 18-kill, 16-dig double-double from Haylee Lyons and 14 kills from Cori Leavitt and 44 assists and 11 digs from setter Cynphany Henderson.
WWU returns home next week hosting Western Oregon and Saint Martin's in GNAC matches on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
