POMONA, Calif. – No. 24-ranked Western Washington Universityvolleyball team battled through several competitive stretches Friday evening, but Cal Poly Pomona used a strong offensive attack to earn a 25-22, 25-19, 25-17 three-set victory over the Vikings on Friday during the second day of the Bronco Classic inside Kellogg Arena.

Senior Delaney Speer led the Vikings with 10 kills while hitting .320 for the match and added a team-high three service aces for 14.0 points. Freshman opposite Jasmine Terry contributed five kills, while senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl added four kills without an attack error, hitting .333. Vossenkuhl also led the Vikings at the net with four blocks, while Terry finished with three blocks and freshman middle Quinn Pedersen added three.

Freshman setter Maya Quitiquit paced the Western offense with 10 assists, with senior Caroline Hansen contributing eight assists. Senior libero Finnley Claeys led the defensive effort with seven digs, while sophomore Chayse Flick-Williams added four digs.

Western opened the match with a strong push, overcoming an early 6-5 deficit with a 5-1 run to take a 10-7 advantage. The Vikings continued to battle throughout the opening set, including a late 3-0 stretch that trimmed a 22-19 deficit to 22-21, but Cal Poly Pomona answered with three of the final four points to take the opening frame, 25-22.

The Vikings continued to battle in the second set, but CPP established control with a 7-1 run that turned a 2-2 tie into a 9-3 advantage. Western answered with several scoring stretches, including a 4-2 run that brought the Vikings within 18-14. Speer then sparked another late push with back-to-back service aces as WWU scored four consecutive points to cut a 23-15 deficit to 23-19. Cal Poly Pomona, however, closed the set with the final two points to take a 2-0 lead.

Western again came out aggressively in the third set, opening with a 2-0 advantage before the Broncos responded. After CPP built a 16-9 lead, the Vikings mounted another comeback attempt, scoring five of the next six points to pull within 17-14. The Broncos responded with an 8-3 closing run to secure the 25-17 set victory and complete the three-set sweep.

As a team, Western recorded 26 kills, six service aces and eight total blocks. Cal Poly Pomona finished with 50 kills and a .422 hitting percentage.

The Vikings fall to 2-3 on the season, while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 5-1.

The Vikings (2-3) close out the non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday concluding the Bronco Classic with a 1:30 pm game against Cal State LA.
