Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - All-America forward Fred Hooks tied a career high with 40 points and reserve center Trey Shannon scored four key points in the final minute of play as nationally ranked Humboldt State held off Western Washington University, 102-100, in double overtime, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest Thursday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

The Vikings, who suffered their first home loss in seven contests this season, fell to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. Forward Grant Dykstra (So., Everson/Lynden Christian) led the Vikings with 28 points, seven rebounds and five steals, and forward Craig Roosendaal (Jr., Shoreline/King's) added a career-high 25 points and a game-high nine rebounds, hitting 7-of-10 on 3-pointers.

Humboldt State, ranked No.2 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches/Division II Bulletin Top 25, improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC.

Western, which led by as much as 13 in the first half, had taken a 97-94 lead with two minutes left in the second extra period, but Lumberjack forward Austin Nichols, who had 22 points, made two free throws, and then Shannon, trailing on a fastbreak, made a layin to put Humboldt State up, 98-97, with 40 seconds left.

After Dykstra missed a 3-pointer, Shannon, who had just one point in the first 49 minutes of action, hit two more free throws to make the margin three, 100-97, with 20 seconds left. Western had a final chance to tie, but guard Jason Burrell (Sr., Ontario, CA) missed a 3-pointer from the right wing with five seconds left.

Western nearly won the game in the first overtime, as Burrell, who had 11 points and nine assists, had a short jumper from the key bounce off the iron.

Hooks, who last season had 29 points and 17 rebounds and hit the game-winning shot in a 73-72 triumph over the Vikings at Carver Gym, was 16-of-24 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday, scoring 36 points in regulation.

Western led nearly the entire first half, using a 9-2 run to open up a 38-27 lead with 5:29 left in the period. Aided by Roosendaal scoring 17 points in the first 17 minutes, the Vikings were up by 13, 48-35, with less than a minute left in the half, but the Lumberjacks scored the final five points of the period, then the first four of the second half, to narrow the margin to four, 48-44, with 18:45 left in regulation.

Western maintained the lead until a basket and free throw by guard Mark White gave Humboldt State a 69-67 lead with 6:47 left. After that, there were 14 lead changes and eight ties, with neither team leading by more than three points until the final three seconds of the second overtime.

Center Rod Picou (Jr., Oakland, CA/Castlemont) had 15 points and eight rebounds for Western. Guard Ryan Diggs (So., Victorville, CA/Silverado) added 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals as all five Viking starters reached double figures.

It was the second consecutive overtime game for Western, the first time the Vikings had done that since the 1997-98 season. It was also the first multiple overtime since that year, when Western suffered a 112-104 triple overtime loss to BYU-Hawaii after beating Hawaii Pacific, 102-97, in double overtime two nights earlier.

The Vikings, who have lost five of seven games after a 5-0 start, entertain Western Oregon University in a GNAC counter Saturday (7 p.m.).
