CHICO, Calif. - Western Washington University managed just three singles as it lost 4-0 to Chico State University in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at Nettleton Stadium.
The Vikings fell to 11-5 and Chico State improved to 11-16 with just its second win in nine games. The second game is slated to start at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Chico State pitcher Kristin Paese (7-6) struck out nine, retiring eight in a row during one stretch.
Getting Western's hits were Megan McPhee (Jr., Anacortes) in the first, Mandy Kaestner (So., Coeur d'Alene, ID) in the sixth and Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) in the seventh.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in first. They scored another run in the third on a single by Allison Shirley and two more in the fifth, Kamala Kiffe driving in one with a single and later scoring on a wild pitch.
Sarah Arnold (Fr., Vancouver/Evergreen), 2-3, got the loss for Western.
Western split a twinbill at Sonoma State on Monday and swept two games with San Francisco State on Tuesday. The Vikings complete their eight-game northern California road trip with a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday (1 p.m.).
