ARCATA, Calif. - Sarah Scott drove in five runs and scored two as National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II nationally No.9-ranked Humboldt State University defeated Western Washington University, 9-1, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Lumberjack Field.
Western fell to 15-15 overall and 4-5 league with its fourth straight loss. Humboldt State, rated No.1 in the West Region and the defending conference champion, improved to 37-10 overall and 12-1 league.
Scott got the Lumberjacks off to a fast start with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and drove in two more with a single in Humboldt State's five-run fourth as the game ended midway through the fifth because of the eight-run mercy rule Jessica Padilla had a solo home run, her seventh of the season, in the third for the Lumberjacks.
Humboldt State's Tracy Motsny (18-3) threw the complete-game victory, allowing just four hits. She struck out two and walked one.
Western's only run came in the second inning as Cortney Walton (Fr., Chesapeake, VA) singled across Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest), who drew a walk and advanced to third on a single by Charity Harmeson (Sr., Oxnard, CA).
The Vikings' Jackie Quint (Fr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) got the loss (4-6), working three-plus innings and giving up six runs before being replaced by Sarah Arnold (Fr., Vancouver/Evergreen).
Getting Western's other two hits, both singles, were Ashley Barber (So., Camas) and Dani Deyette (Sr., Olympia).
After today's second game, the Vikings, who have lost 11 of their last 15 games after an 11-4 start, return home for an eight-game home stand, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday (11 a.m.) against Northwest Nazarene University.
