Box Score
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Ryan Hopp (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) scored a goal early in each half and forward Cody Hagler (Jr., Canby, OR) had three assists as Western Washington University defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1, in a men's college soccer game Saturday at Civic Stadium. The Vikings improved to 1-1-0 with the victory. Cal Poly Pomona fell to 1-1-0. Hopp opened the scoring in the 16th minute, taking a pass from Hagler and knocking the ball past charging Bronco goalkeeper Tim Sisk from 12 yards out. Cal Poly Pomona tied the game just five seconds before halftime, as Peter Hazdovac deflected in a Ben Van der Fluit header after a corner kick. Western regained the lead in the 58th minute, as Hopp hammered home from six yards a cross from the left by Hagler. The Vikings got an insurance goal from freshman Nick Webb (Bellingham/Squalicum) on a counter-attack in the 77th minute. Hagler had an initial shot blocked by Sisk, but the rebound came to Jeff Lane (Sr., Yakima/West Valley), and he fed Webb who scored from 10 yards out. "That was a great effort," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Our players believed in what they were doing and in the players next to them. It was definitely a team effort. "We got out in transition way better (than a 1-0 loss to Warner Pacific on Thursday), and that created a lot of our chances." The three assists were the first points since the 2001 season for Hagler, who led Western in scoring that year but played in just one game over the last two seasons because of injuries. Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-9 edge in shots. Western hosts Cal State Dominiguez Hills on Monday (2 p.m.) at Civic Stadium.
