BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Outside hitter Marissa Hill (So., North Bend/Mount Si) had 13 kills and a match-high .542 attack percentage with no errors in 24 attempts as Western Washington University swept University of Alaska Fairbanks, 30-20, 30-21, 38-36, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday at the Carlson Center.
It was the seventh straight win for the Vikings, who improved to 14-5 overall and remained in second place in the GNAC at 10-1. They have won 12 of their last 13 matches.
Alaska Fairbanks fell to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in league play.
The sweep was the Vikings' ninth of the season, all of them coming in their last 12 matches.
"Marissa (Hill) had a real outstanding performance tonight," said Western coach Diane Flick. "She was our go-to hitter and when we needed a point, she came through for us."
Jaime Anderson (Jr., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) had 13 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for the Vikings. Libero Courtney Schneider (Jr., Snohomish) had a match-high 34 digs and Shasta Bennett (Fr., Brush Prairie/Prairie) added 13 digs and a match-high three service aces.
Trailing 17-14 in game one, Western scored 17 of the next 21 points, setter Katie Robinson (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) serving eight straight points during one stretch, and Hill serving the last four points.
The Vikings broke open game two with a 13-5 run, Robinson serving five straight points, to take a 27-17 lead and closed the contest on a kill by Hill.
There were 27 ties and 14 lead changes in game three, Hill ending the match with two kills.
Western stays on the road to meet University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday (8 p.m. PT).
