BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Three members of the Western Washington University men's soccer squad have been named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star Team, announced today.
Forward Zach Bauling was a repeater for the Vikings, while midfielder Joel Grossman and defender Paul Kimbrough were first-time honorees.
Bauling, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., is a physical education major maintaining a 3.66 grade point average (4.0 scale). He has appeared in 13 games this season, making eight starts, with one goal and one assist.
Grossman, a junior from Anacortes, is a business management major who owns a 3.82 GPA. He has scored two goals.
Kimbrough, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, Utah, has posted a 3.28 GPA in environmental studies. He has been a mainstay on defense this season, making seven starts, and has one assist.
A total of 19 were named to this year's GNAC all-academic team.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.20 and be in their second season of collegiate competition.
Western, 2-16-1 overall and 0-3-0 in GNAC competition, wraps up the 2006 season tonight at Whatcom CC against conference rival Seattle U (7 p.m.).
GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
59 Named To GNAC Soccer Academic Team
SPOKANE - A total of 59 student-athletes - 40 women and 19 men - have been named to the 2006 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic all-star team.
Heading up the women's academic team are Northwest Nazarene goalkeeper Amanda Merrell and NNU forward Katie McNutt, who both have perfect 4.00 GPAs during their collegiate careers.
Northwest Nazarene placed the most players on the women's academic unit with 11. Seattle and Seattle Pacific earned 10 and nine spots, respectively.
Adam Jensen of Seattle University is the top scholar on the men's squad with a cumulative GPA of 3.94. SPU dominated the selections with 10 players chosen, while Seattle and Western Washington have six and three, respectively.
Eight student-athletes were named to the soccer all-star team for the third time, including Michelle Phillips of Central Washington; Mollie Taylor, Michael Morris and Andy Willis, all of Seattle Pacific; Ana Gutierrez, Cassy Smith and Adam Jensen, all of Seattle, and Lisa Munyon of Western Oregon. Twenty-three more players were repeat selections from the 2005 team.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
