BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Jason Cascio scored his 11th goal of the season in the 61st minute as nationally ranked Seattle University edged Western Washington University, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Wednesday at Championship Field.
It was the third straight game in which the Vikings failed to score and the seventh time this season. They fell to 2-13-1 overall and 0-2-0 in GNAC action.
Seattle, ranked No.15 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25, improved to 9-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
"We gave up a goal in the second half on a mistake in the back, which was unfortunate because we were playing pretty well," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We created quite a few chances that we definitely needed to finish in the first half, and that came back to haunt us. It was a winnable game for us."
Setting up Seattle's winning goal was Pat Thomas, who drove down the right wing and found Cascio in the middle of the box.
Western's best scoring opportunity came in the 72nd minute when Sean Connor (Fr., Mount Vernon) sent a free kick into the box that Gus Zadra (Sr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) dove for, but his header went wide of the net.
Seattle had an 11-5 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Redhawk goalkeeper Chris Sorensen had two saves in picking up his third shutout of the season.
Western, which has yet to win in eight road games this season, travels to Phoenix, Ariz., to meet Hawaii Pacific University on Sunday (8 p.m.) and Grand Canyon University on Monday (1 p.m.).
