ARCATA, Calif. - Freshman forward Nick Saletto (Bellingham/Squalicum) scored a goal in his first collegiate game, but it wasn't enough as Western Washington University fell 2-1 to Humboldt State University in men's soccer action Thursday at the HSU Soccer Field. The game was the season opener for both schools.
Saletto tied the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute, knocking in a two-touch shot from 12 yards out off a Robbie Curry (Sr., Mount Vernon) corner kick.
"It was good for Nick to get on the board," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We'd like to get that guy rolling"
Humboldt State scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 84th minute. Jon Eseman got loose on a breakaway and chipped the ball over Viking goalkeeper Christian Warman (Fr., Sedro-Woolley), who had three saves. Lance Pimental and Drew Ryan were credited with assists.
The Lumberjacks began the scoring in the third minute with Eseman getting the ball on a corner kick to Zlatan Sahmanovic, who knocked it in.
Western had a 12-8 shot advantage and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
"Paul Kimbrough (So., Salt Lake City, UT/East) played well in the back, with his endless work ethic and sacrificing his body numerous times to make defensive plays," Connell said, "and Mitch Barrows (Fr., Ferndale) came off the bench and gave us a lift in the midfield with his smarts and quick play."
The Vikings host Cal State Dominguez Hills in their home opener Sunday (3 p.m.) at the Whatcom Community College Soccer Field. The Toros won the Far West Region championship last year and reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, being ranked No.5 nationally in the final poll.
