PHOENIX, AZ - Western Washington University had its worst outing of the young season, being swept 30-27, 30-20, 33-31 by Barry University FL to open play Friday at the Grand Canyon University Cactus Classic.
"It's probably the worst outing we've had and we can only go up from here," said Western coach Diane Flick.
The Vikings, who fell to 2-4, never led in the first two games and had an overall attack percentage of just .102, hitting minus-.061 in game two.
Barry, which evened its record at 2-2, was led by Lorine Durski with a match-high 20 kills. The Buccaneers, who hit .224 and had an 8-1 advantage in service aces, also got 10 kills from Nicole Castera and 21 digs from Lauren Evans.
Western libero Courtney Schneider (Jr., Snohomish) had 14 digs and Tiana Roma (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had seven kills and three blocks. All three figures were team highs.
Trailing 17-11 in game three, the Vikings came back to take a 30-29 lead. With the score tied, 31-31, Barry got kills from Samara de Freitas and Durski to end the match.
Western meets Armstrong Atlantic State University GA at 4 p.m. and takes on host Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
