CHICO, Calif. - A goal on a free kick by Jacob Haddock (Sr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) was all the Western Washington University men's soccer team could muster as the Vikings fell 3-1 to Chico State University in a non-league contest Wednesday at Nettleton Stadium.
The Vikings, who have scored just three goals this season, fell to 0-6-0. Two of their losses have been to nationally ranked teams.
Chico State improved to 1-2-0 as the Wildcats won their home opener for the ninth time in 12 years.
After a scoreless first half, Chico State's Jason Phillips volleyed home a cross by Ian Hilgart-Martiszus in the 52nd minute. In the 60th minute, A.J. Carboneau took a pass from Gavin Edgell near the edge of the box, beat two defenders, and found the near post for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.
Haddock brought Western back to within one, scoring on a free kick from 20 yards in the 62nd minute. Chico State's final goal came in the 83rd minute when Kris Shauer dribbled through a pair of defenders and scored after hooking up with Phillips on a give-and-go.
"We played a really strong first half, had a lot of possession, and got some good of chances," said Western coach Travis Connell. "But we made a couple of key errors in the second half that resulted in goals for the opposition."
"After Haddock's goal made it 2-1, we pressed more players forward and they were able to counter attack for their third goal."
The Vikings had a 10-9 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Western returns for a three-game home stand, beginning Monday (7 p.m.) with The Evergreen State College at the Whatcom Community College Soccer Complex.
