LACEY, Wash. - Forward Conner Biggs scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute as Saint Martin's University defeated Western Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Monday at the Regional Athletic Complex.
The Vikings dropped to 4-8-0 overall and 1-3-0 in GNAC play, losing for the seventh time in their last nine contests.
Saint Martin's improved to 8-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in league action with its second straight victory. The Saints had upset nationally No.24-ranked Seattle Pacific, 3-2, last Thursday.
Biggs' goal from 10 yards into the right-hand corner was his fourth of the season. It came on a cross from Xan Nixon.
"I was proud of how we played in the second half," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Even though things haven't been going great for us, we still showed some heart and character in the second half, coming out and scoring and putting pressure on them. Then they counterattacked us and got a goal really against the run of play."
Western had tied the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Kellan Brown stole the ball deep in the Saints' end, played it through to Tyler Bjork (So., Kirkland/Juanita), who ran in on the right side and slotted a shot from 12 yards.
It was the first goal of the season for Bjork.
Saint Martin's led 1-0 at halftime, Ruben Orozco scoring from 30 yards out after taking a free kick from Tony Armitage.
The Saints had advantages of 16-8 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.
Western has a 12-day layoff before playing at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Oct. 17 (2:30 p.m.) in a GNAC counter.
