TURLOCK, Calif. - Western Washington University advanced to the semifinal round of the Gold Bracket on Sunday, defeating Cal State San Bernardino 4-2 in eight innings at the Cal State Stanislaus Mizuno Tournament of Champions.
The Vikings, who are 2-4 in tourney play and 13-14 overall, meet Cal State Dominguez Hills, which advanced with a 1-0 win over Dixie State UT. The Toros, who blanked Western 2-0 to begin play Friday, are unbeaten in six tourney games and 29-13 overall.
Western pitcher Jessica Rosencrants (Sr., Sequim/Peninsula) (5-5) allowed the Coyotes just four hits in the complete-game victory with both of their runs being unearned. She struck out five and walked one.
With the game tied at 1-1 after the regulation seven innings, the Viking scored three times in the top of the eighth to make it 4-1. The tiebreaking run scored on a throwing error. Andrea Sherrill (So., Edmonds/Kamiak) then doubled in a run and scored on a single by Caitlin Dotlich (So., Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edison).
Sherrill was 2-for-4, the only player on either team with two hits.
CSUSB scored an unearned run in the second as did Western in the fourth. The Toros scored one more in the eighth when the runner placed on second, stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly.
