BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University scored twice in the last five minutes to defeat Saint Martin's University, 3-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
The Vikings improved to 4-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the GNAC. SMU fell to 3-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play.
Western's Tye Hastings (So., Mill Creek/Jackson) scored the game-winner in the 86th minute, just moments after checking into the game. Andrew Weishaar (So., Puyallup) chested down a Matt Sanchez (Fr., Bellingham) cross into the path of Hastings, who blasted home from 12 yards out for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Weishaar added an insurance goal less than two minutes later, tapping home a rebound of an initial shot by Tyler Bjork (Sr., Kirkland/Juanita).
"It was an important win for us," said Western coach Travis Connell. "It was important in the conference race and for our progress as a team. I was pleased with how we played and how we dealt with adversity."
The Vikings had taken the lead in the 61st minute, when Kellan Brown (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) finished from 15 yards after a short pass from Oscar Jimenez (Sr., Mount Vernon).
But Saint Martin's equalized in the 72nd minute, as Austin Kelley scored after working a quick 1-2 with Tony Armitage, and the Saints had an apparent go-ahead goal called back for offside two minutes later.
WWU freshman goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Portland, OR/Portland Christian) had five saves to earn the victory.
The assist for Jimenez was the 21st of his four-year career, leaving him one shy of the school record and three short of the GNAC standard.
The Vikings travel to Phoenix, Ariz., for three non-conference games, beginning with Grand Canyon University on Thursday (7:30 p.m.).
