Vikings eighth after first round at Chico State Wildcat Classic

CORNING, Calif. - Western Washington University is eighth among 16 teams following first-round action Monday at the Chico State Wildcat Men's Golf Invitational being held at the 7,256-yard Sevillano Links.

The second round was suspended because of darkness and will be completed Tuesday along with the third and final round.

The Vikings, ranked No.10 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll, shot an opening-round 317.

Chico State, ranked No.3 nationally, holds a nine-shot lead after shooting 294. Grand Canyon is second at 303.

Chico State's Kyle Souza, the defending NCAA II champion, fired a 1-under par 71 to lead the medalist standings. Teammate Eric Frazzetta is second, shooting an ever par 72.

Nick Varelia (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) shot a 77 to lead WWU and is tied for 16th place. Sandy Vaughan (Jr., Seattle/O'Dea) had a 79 (tied for 28th), Jake Webb (Jr., Issaquah/Skyline) 80 (tied for 38th), Dylan Goodwin (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) 81 (tied for 46th) and Brian Barhanovich (Sr., Everett) 83 (tied for 57th).

Sevillano Links is a John Daly Signature course. It is one of the few true links style courses in the Western United States.
