BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Reserve Chris Voth scored twice, lifting Northwest Nazarene University to a 2-1 overtime victory over Western Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
Tye Hastings (So., Mill Creek/Jackson) had the lone goal for the Vikings, who fell to 5-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the GNAC.
Northwest Nazarene improved to 6-7-1 overall, and claimed their first GNAC triumph of the season at 1-8-0.
Western held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Voth headed home a Daniel Starbuck free kick less than two minutes into the second half.
Voth then won the game in the fourth minute of overtime, taking a pass from Nate Hamm into the penalty area then finishing from 10 yards with the outside of his right foot.
"We haven't played well in the second half of the last three games," said Western coach Travis Connell (13th year). "I thought we were digging ourselves out of it toward the end of regulation, but the guy scored a great goal in overtime."
Hastings had given Western the lead in the 13th minute, getting a pass from Jin Dangvan (Jr., Vancouver/Mountain View) and driving a shot from 18 yards into the lower right corner.
NNU goalkeeper Zander Engeman made eight saves.
Western, which had a 19-6 advantage in shots, is now just 1-5-0 at home this season. It was also just the second loss ever to NNU in 12 meetings.
The Vikings are at Saint Martin's on Thursday (1 p.m.) for a GNAC counter.
