LACEY, Wash. - Western Washington University was blanked 2-0 by Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Thursday afternoon at SMU Field.
It was the third straight loss and fifth in six games for the Vikings, who fell to 5-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference action.
Saint Martin's improved to 5-9-2 overall and 4-3-1in league play. The win snapped a four-game series losing streak for the Saints against WWU and was just the second in 10 meetings (2-8-0) overall with the Vikings.
The Saints got unassisted goals from Austin Kelley in the 33rd minute and Dylan Gaydosh in the 83rd minute. Kelley's score came from 10 yards after being deflected by the defense and Gaydosh's was from five yards off a rebound.
"It was senior day for Saint Martin's and they played very inspired and were the better team on the day," said Western coach Travis Connell (13th year). "So, now we will regroup for our big rivalry game on Saturday with Seattle Pacific. I'm looking forward to the team bouncing back and performing at a much higher level than today."
Saint Martin's had a 15-9 advantage in shots with the corner kicks even at 4-4.
The Vikings are at nationally No.15-ranked Seattle Pacific on Saturday (7 p.m.) for a GNAC counter at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.
