BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Alex Couweleers scored twice in the last 11 minutes, lifting Trinity Lutheran College to a 3-1 victory over Western Washington University in a non-conference men's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
Tyler Bjork (Sr., Kirkland/Juanita) scored the lone goal for the Vikings, who suffered their fifth straight loss and seventh in the last eight games in falling to 5-11-0.
Trinity Lutheran, affiliated with the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association, improved to 11-4-1.
Couweleers, a graduate of Meridian High School, broke a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute, taking a long pass from Jesus Torres on one high hop and finishing with a looping volley from 12 yards out. The pair connected again with four minutes left, as a Torres pass created a breakaway that Couweleers finished from 14 yards.
Torres had opened the scoring in the 21st minute as his 25-yard shot deflected off a defender and into the lower right corner of the net. But Western equalized in the 36th minute as Jin Dangvan (Vancouver/Mountain View) put Bjork through on a breakaway and Bjork finished from seven yards out.
The Eagles had a 16-5 advantage in shots.
The Vikings close out their season Thursday (7 p.m.), entertaining Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
