PHOENIX, Ari. - Western Washington University was unable to hold onto a second-half lead and fell 2-1 to nationally ranked Grand Canyon University in a NCAA Division II West Regional men's soccer contest Thursday on the GCU Soccer Field.
The Vikings dropped to 4-5-0 and Grand Canyon improved to 7-2-1. The Antelopes, ranked No.16 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 Poll, are undefeated in their last five games (4-0-1).
Midfielder Kellan Brown (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) gave Western a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Less than four minutes later, Grand Canyon tied the game at 1-1 as Mitchell Garcia scored from six yards off a rebound of a shot by Lucas Mazier.
In the 67th minute, Saeed Robinson put the Antelopes in front for good with his 12th goal of the campaign. Credited with an assist was Cordero Young.
Robinson entered the game tied for second nationally in goals.
"We showed a lot of character today and played well," said Western coach Travis Connell. "I'm proud of their performance. This is a difficult place to play and we played well enough to get a result here. It didn't go our way this time, but if we can play like this every game we should do fine."
Grand Canyon had a 15-5 lead in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vikings next meet Cal Baptist at GCU field on Saturday (5 p.m.)
