OLYMPIA, Wash. - Western Washington University's Sophie Elstrott (Sr., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) successfully defended her medalist title and the Vikings won the team championship for the second straight year at the Saint Martin's University Women's Golf Invitational which ended Saturday at the Olympia Country Club.
The Vikings, ranked No.8 in the National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, shot a final-round 316 for a 36-hole total of 631.
Victoria placed second at 645 (319), one stroke ahead of Hawaii Hilo (646), which shot 313 Saturday, the low round of the two-day tournament. Concordia OR was fourth in the nine-team field at 650 (324).
Elstrott finished with a 2-over par 75 to place first at 2-over 148. That was five strokes better than Victoria's Megan Woodland (77) and Concordia's Sunny Powers (76), who tied for second at 153.
"I'm really pleased with how we came out and played today," said Western coach Bo Stephan (7th year). "We managed the golf course very well and this should be a good springboard to our tournament next week."
Two Vikings tied for 11th at 161. They were Claire Rachor (Jr., Bellingham), who shot a 77, and Alexandria Taylor (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake) (83).
Western's Kara Zitzman (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) tied for 17th at 163 (83) and Anna Bourland (R-Fr., Bainbridge) was 21st at 165 (81).
The Vikings host their 18th annual WWU Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. Play begins at 9 a.m. both days.
Western is seeking a third straight victory at its tourney, winning eight of the last nine years. Elstrott was the co-medalist in 2010.
