OLYMPIA, Wash. - Western Washington University's Kara Zitzman (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) tied for sixth in medalist play and the Vikings placed third in the team standings at the Saint Martin's University Women's Golf Invitational Tournament which ended Saturday at the Olympia Golf and Country Club.
The Vikings shot 327 for a 36-hole total of 663.
Tarleton State, ranked No.8 in the latest Golf World/Women's Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, won the event by 24 strokes, shooting 310 for a 636 total. British Columbia was second at 660 (317) and Hawaii Hilo was fourth at 664 (328), one stroke behind WWU.
Zitzman shot 82 for a 161 total.
Taking medalist honors was Tarleton State's Isabell Jimenez Perea, who fired a 1-under par 72 for a two-day total of 153.
Kristen Hansen (Fr., Spokane/Mead) and Anna Bourland (So., Bainbridge) each shot 81 for the Vikings, Hansen placing 13th at 165 and Bourland 16th at 168. Claire Rachor (Sr., Bellingham) tied for 17th (83=169) and Katya Case (Jr., Enumclaw) tied for 29th (87=177).
"The greens were a little more accommodating today and the girls hung in there," said WWU assistant coach Luke Bennett. "They want to get back after it at our invitational."
The Vikings compete in their own 19th Annual WWU Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. Play begins at 9 a.m. both days. WWU is looking for its fourth straight title at that event.
