BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Bettering its opening round by 25 strokes, the Western Washington University women's golf team moved up one spot to place seventh among 13 teams at the 19th Annual Viking Invitational which ended Tuesday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Led by the 2-under par 71 of Anna Bourland (So., Bainbridge), the Vikings shot 307 for a 36-hole total of 639.
Hawaii Hilo took the team trophy, shooting 299, the best round of the tournament, for a winning score of 608. That was six strokes better than first-day leader British Columbia (307=614).
Two Top 10-ranked teams followed with No.8 Tarleton State placing third (306=616) and No.7 Grand Canyon fourth (307=617).
"It's unfortunate that we put ourselves in that deep of a hole, but I'm pleased that we were able to come back with a solid effort today," said WWU coach Bo Stephan (8th year).
Bourland finished in a five-way tie for eighth at 153.
"She got to two under, then bogeyed a couple holes, but finished strong with birdies on two of her last three holes," Stephan said of Bourland. "She has been a real bright spot for us this fall,"
WWU's Kristen Hansen (Fr., Spokane/Mead) placed 20th (76=158), Kara Zitzman (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) tied for 26th (79=161) and Claire Rachor (Sr., Bellingham) tied for 51st (81=172).
The Vikings' Katya Case (Jr., Enumclaw), playing as an individual, tied for 32nd (77=162).
British Columbia's Casara Hong took medalist honors at 1-over 147 (72). That was two strokes better than runner-up Kacie Harada (76=149) of Hawaii Hilo. Tarleton State's Sharon Lau was third (75=150), followed by first-day leader Kalcey Tate of Grand Canyon (79=151).
This is just the second time in 11 years that WWU has not won its own tournament.
The only other non-Viking winner was British Columbia in 2008.
