WWU takes dual match at UBC, 292 to 294

Feb. 10, 2012

VANCOUVER, BC - Nick Varelia (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) fired a two-under par 71 and Dylan Goodwin (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) shot an even par 73 in helping nationally top 10-ranked Western Washington University to a two-shot dual match victory, 292 to 294, in men's golf action Friday at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.

The competition was the first since late October for the Vikings, ranked No.9 in the Golf Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.

"To shoot par on a world-class golf course with the limited time we've had to practice, I'm very pleased," said WWU coach Steve Card (19th year). "The pins were placed the same as they were on Sunday at last year's Canadian Open."

Jake Webb (Jr., Issaquah/Skyline) and Mark Strickland (R-Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) each shot 74 for the Vikings, and Brian Barhanovich (Sr., Everett) shot 76.

Playing as individuals for WWU were Evan Needham (Jr., Lynden/Meridian), who shot 74, and Thomas Jun (Sr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer), who shot 78.

Taking medalist honors was UBC's Jack Wesche with a three-under 70.

WWU, which placed among the top three teams in all five of its fall tournaments, next competes at the Cal State East Bay Pioneer Shootout on March 5-6 at Vallejo, Calif.
