TURLOCK, Calif. - Western Washington University's Dylan Goodwin (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) and Craig Crawford (So., Stanwood/Highland Christian) are tied for third-place in medalist play, three shots off the lead, and the Vikings are second in the team standings, 11 shots off the pace, following first-day action Monday at the 39th annual Cal State Stanislaus Jim Hanny Invitational Men's Golf Tournament being held at the Turlock Golf and Country Club.
Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m.
WWU, ranked No.7 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, had rounds of even par 288 and 291 for a 36-hole total of 579. The Vikings are 11 strokes behind leader and No.4-rated Cal State Stanislaus, which is 8-under par at 568 (282-286). Chico State, ranked No.5, is third at 585 (289-296).
"It was a decent day for us, except for a disappointing last couple holes of the second round," said WWU coach Steve Card (19th year), whose team trailed Cal State Stanislaus by six strokes after the first round.
Goodwin (70-72) and Crawford (71-71) are tied for third at 142 with Kyle Souza (71-71) from Chico State. Dixie State's Nick Drost tops the field at 5-under 139 (67-72), with Hawaii-Hilo's James Hall is second at 4-under 140 (71-69).
WWU's Nick Varelia (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) is tied for 14th at 146 (72-74), Sandy Vaughan (Jr., Seattle/O'Dea) is tied for 41st at 150 (76-74) and Jake Webb (Jr., Issaquah/Skyline) is tied for 68th at 154 (75-79).
