LITCHFIELD PARK, Ari. - The Western Washington University women's golf team placed 11th, its lowest finish in a tournament since 2007, at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational which ended Tuesday at the Wigwam Golf Course.
The Vikings, ranked No.17 in the latest National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25, shot a final-round 324 for a 36-hole total of 646.
Host and No.7-rated Grand Canyon shot 298, the best round of the two-day event, to win by 10 shots at 604. Sonoma State (303=614) was second in the 18-team field.
"This a great bunch of young women, but they are just not performing right now," said WWU coach Bo Stephan, who is concerned about the Vikings not qualifying for the Super Regional in early May.
"They played well in the fall, but it has been very disappointing this spring. We've got one more chance next week."
That is Apr. 9-10 when WWU ends its regular season at the Tarleton State Invitational.
The last time the Vikings failed to make regionals was in 2002, having made 10 straight appearances. They have gone to nationals in five of the last eight seasons.
WWU had only one player break 80 Tuesday, Alex Taylor (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake), who shot 75 to place 19th at 157.
The Vikings' Sophie Elstrott (Sr., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) tied for 42nd at 162 (81), Claire Rachor (Jr., Bellingham) tied for 49th at 163 (85), Anna Bourland (R-Fr., Bainbridge) tied for 60th at 165 (83) and Kara Zitzman (Jr., Woodinville/Redmond) tied for 62nd at 166 (85).
The medalist was Grand Canyon's Ashley Mooney (75), who won by one stroke over Tarleton State's Sharon Lau (77), 148 to 149.
