BISMARCK, North Dakota - The University of Mary got the decisive goal with just over six minutes remaining, claiming a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University on Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at the Community Bowl.
The Vikings, who entered unbeaten in their last four games, fell to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the GNAC. Midfielder Sujinda Dangvan (Sr., Vancouver/Mountain View) scored Western's goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
U-Mary, in its first year as a GNAC member in men's soccer, improved to 3-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play.
U-Mary held a 1-0 halftime lead after Jonathon Sellers headed in a Ryan Buchholz throw-in in the 12th minute.
The Vikings, who had a 21-12 advantage in shot attempts, leveled the score in the 82nd minute as Dangvan was pulled down in the penalty area and converted from the spot for his third goal in the last two games.
But the Marauders got the game-winner barely a minute later, again set up by a long throw-in.
A WWU defender's attempted volley went back to goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (So., Portland, OR/Portland Christian), who was ruled to have handled a back pass.
The infraction gave U-Mary an indirect free kick six yards out. Buchholz tapped the ball to Aaron McElwee, who blasted home the game-winner.
"We started bad and gave up a goal, but then we did a great job of clawing back into the game," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "But sometimes it doesn't go your way at the end.
"We do need to start games better. It's the second game in a row we've come out slow. We need to play entire games the way we played the last hour."
Rogers had five saves for WWU.
"Keegan made a couple of great saves in both halves," said Connell. "He was definitely our player of the match."
WWU is at University of Sioux Falls for a GNAC contest Saturday (7 p.m.).
