WWU gets in win column, blanks Hawaii Pacific, 1-0

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Justin Moore (Sr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) scored his second goal in three games this season midway through the first half and the defense made it stand up as Western Washington University defeated Hawaii Pacific, 1-0, on Friday night in a West Region men's soccer contest at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.

It was the first win for the 1-2-0 Vikings, who opened a four-game home stand. HPU lost for the second time in as many outings.

"He's (Moore) electric," said WWU coach Travis Connell, "especially when we're defending like this and he can play on the counterattack. He's a dangerous player with his speed and tenacity. He could have had another one today. That's a great combination that we've got going."

Moore, who has been a defender for the Vikings in each of the last two seasons, scored in the 25th minute as he volleyed in a loose ball. It was the second game-winning goal of his four-year career. He did not score as junior after finding the net twice as a freshman and once as a sophomore.

It was the first shutout of the season for WWU and the first of sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Rogers' (Portland, OR/Portland Christian) collegiate career. Rogers made three saves and the Vikings had six stops overall.

"Keegan was excellent, especially in the first half," Connell said. "We didn't play well in the first half and Keegan made a couple of saves that got us into the second half, and in the second half we played fantastic defense."

Connell also praised the play of freshman midfielder Sawyer Preston (Sammamish/Eastlake), who entered the game in the second half.

"He was a key part of the catalyst that turned the game in our favor because of the way he was playing defense."

The Vikings and HPU each had 13 shots, and the Sea Warriors had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. HPU goalie Mael Lefebvre made five saves.

WWU entertains Dixie State on Sunday (1 p.m.).
