SUNRIVER,Ore. - Kyle Schrader (Jr., Olympia/Tumwater) shot a 1-over par 73 to pace the Western Washington University men's golf team in Tuesday's final round at the Golfweek Fall Invitational, one of the premier NCAA Division II events of the season, played at the Crosswater Golf Club.
The Vikings, ranked No.14 in the Golf World/Nike Golf NCAA II Top 25 Poll, finished 12th in the 15-team field. It is just the third time in 14 years that they have failed to make the top 10 at a tournament.
No.6 Cal State Monterey Bay won the 54-hole event by 20 strokes at 893 (303) over runner-up and No.12 Chico State (294=913). WWU shot a final-round 316 for a 950 total.
Schrader moved up 20 places to finish in a three-way tie for 34th at 236.
Mark Strickland (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) led the Vikings, tying for 31st at 235 (81). WWU's David Fonua (Fr., Seattle/O'Dea) placed 50th at 241 (81), Chris Hatch (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 54th at 243 (81) and Jack Kelly (So., Snoqualmie/Mount Si) tied for 71st at 252 (84).
Taking medalist honors was Cal State Monterey Bay's Brandon Hortt at 1 over par 217 (73). Teammate Dylan Jackson was second, five strokes behind at 222 (77). Tied for third at 224 were Chico State's Justin Wiles (71) and Dallas Baptist's Kyle Beard (74).
WWU next competes at the Chico State Invitational on Oct. 7-8.
