BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Matt Temple (So., Beaverton, OR) scored a pair of goals, his first of the season, in a span of just over five minutes early in the second half, lifting Western Washington University to a 3-0 victory over Saint Martin's University on Sunday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who won for the fifth time in their last six games, improved to 10-4-3 overall and 8-2-3 in GNAC play.
SMU fell to 5-10-2 overall and 5-6-2 in conference action.
Temple opened the scoring 2:47 into the second half. Getting free on a partial breakaway, he was caught and tackled by a SMU defender in the penalty area, but amid shouts for a penalty from the WWU bench, Temple jumped to his feet and finished with a curling shot inside the right post.
Just 5:10 later, Temple scored again. A shot by Chad Radulovich (Fr., San Ramon, CA/California) seemed headed wide left, but deflected off the right foot of Temple, standing eight yards out, and into the net.
"It was a great win, we had a lot of good performances today," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "It was nice to see Temple get a brace. He's a hard worker, and those two goals were goals he worked hard to get."
Senior defender Bailey Martin (Tacoma/Stadium) completed the scoring in the 78th minute with his first career goal, converting a penalty kick after Tye Hastings was fouled in the goalmouth.
The Vikings had a 21-10 advantage in shot attempts. Goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Jr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian) made three saves to secure the shutout, his sixth of the year.
WWU completes its season on Saturday, Nov. 9 (7 p.m.), entertaining nationally No.3 ranked Simon Fraser at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
"It's good to get to 10 wins, that was a goal at the beginning of the year," Brisbon said. "Now we get ready for one of the best teams in the country."
