TURLOCK, Calif. - Western Washington University's Mark Strickland (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) fired a 1-under par 71, the best round of the day, to place second in medalist play and the Vikings finished third among 16 teams at the 40th Annual Cal State Stanislaus Men's Golf Invitational Tournament which ended Tuesday at Turlock Golf and Country Club.
WWU shot 310 for a 54-hole total of 915, moving up one place in the standings.
The host Warriors won the team title for the 26th time in tournament history, and for the 15th time in the last 18 years. They shot 314 for an 888 total.
Cal State Stanislaus nearly let a 15-stroke first-day lead get away as Cal State Monterey Bay rallied to within two strokes. The Otters finished at 890 after shooting a final-round 301, the best of the day by nine strokes.
Strickland moved up 10 strokes to place second at 4-over 220, six strokes behind medalist leader Trevor Clayton from Cal State Stanislaus, who finished at 2-under 214 (76).
WWU's Dylan Goodwin (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 16th at 229, shooting 77 on the final day, and Jake Webb (Sr., Issaquah/Skyline) (81) and Evan Needham (Sr., Lynden/Meridian) (81) each tied for 30th.
The Vikings' Kyle Schrader (So., Olympia/Tumwater) tied for 56th at 244 (86).
WWU next competes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships Presented by Coeur d'Alene Resort on Apr. 22-23 at Coeur d'Alene, Id. The Vikings have won every league title since it was inaugurated in 2008.
