DUPONT, Wash. - Western Washington University shot 4-under par 284 as it moved up two spots for a six-stroke victory at the Saint Martin's University Men's Golf Preview Invitational that ended Tuesday at The Home Course.
WWU, ranked second in the first NCAA Division II West Regional rating released last week and No.8 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Poll, entered the final day third, four strokes behind leader and No.22 Grand Canyon with Sonoma State second.
The Vikings then proceeded to shoot the best round of the day by three strokes for a 54-hole total of 857, six shots better than the runner-up Antelopes (294=863). Sonoma State was third (293=865), No.13 Hawaii-Hilo fourth (290=866) and No.9 Cal State Monterey Bay fifth (292=869).
"Everyone just played great," said WWU head coach Steve Card. "It was a solid round all the way around, and to do it on that golf course where the regionals are going to be played was really good."
Two Vikings, Dylan Goodwin (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) and Mark Strickland (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak), each shot 2-under par 70 and finished in a five-way tied for eighth at 214.
Jake Webb (Sr., Issaquah/Skyline) shot 72 and tied with four players for 14th at 216, and Evan Needham (Sr., Lynden/Meridian) also shot 72 and tied for 42nd at 222.
WWU's Kyle Schrader (So., Olympia/Tumwater) tied for 52nd at 224 (79) and Jack Kelly (R-Fr., Snoqualmie/Mount Si), playing as an individual, shot 75 and tied for 69th at 229 (75).
Taking medalist honors by one stroke was Montana State Billings' Gage Huft, who shot 6-under 66 for a winning total of 9-under 207. That was one shot better than James Hall of Hawaii-Hilo (69=208) and three better than third place Eddie DeLashmutt of Colorado-Colorado Springs (72=210).
The win was the second straight for WWU, which took top honors two weeks ago at the Cal Baptist Invitational, and its third this season.
WWU next competes in the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational on Apr. 15-16 at Turlock, Calif.
