WWU falls 2-0 at Northwest Nazarene

Oct. 25, 2014

Box Score

NAMPA, Id. - Stymied by some outstanding goalkeeping, Western Washington University fell 2-0 to Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday, Oct. 25, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at the NNU Soccer Field.

The Vikings, who had won five of their previous six games, fell to 7-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in GNAC play. They were held scoreless for the first time in eight games.

NNU improved to 11-3-1 overall and second in the conference standings at 8-2-1. Goalkeeper Alfredo Ontiveros made six saves as the Crusaders recorded their seventh shutout of the season.

"I thought we played very well," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "They had two chances in the first half and scored on one of them. But their goalie was amazing today. He made three saves that I don't know how he made. I thought that was the big difference in the game.

"Those (saves) were early in the first half and, if we had scored, things could have been different, but we didn't and we gave up a goal early in the second half and that hurt us big-time."

Rene Duevel put NNU ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Erik Anderson and Julio Castillo getting assists.

Castillo scored his first goal of the fall in the 49th minute, heading in a pass from Jaime Verdin.

WWU had an 18-13 shot advantage.

The Vikings return home for two GNAC counters, playing host to South Dakota Mines on Thursday, Oct. 30 (7 p.m.) and University of Mary on Saturday, Nov. 1 (7 p.m.).
