BISMARCK, N.D. - Midfielder Gabriele Zaccagnini (Sr., Olympia/Capital) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 68th minute, lifting Western Washington University to a 2-1 victory over University of Mary on Thursday, Oct. 9, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at the Community Bowl.

It was the second straight win for the Vikings, who improved to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the GNAC. It also was their second consecutive multi-goal game after not scoring more than one in their first eight contests.

U-Mary suffered its fifth straight loss in falling to 2-5-1 overall and 1-5-0 in GNAC action. The Marauders tied the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute on a goal by Jordan Pearce, his seventh of the season, as he headed in a corner kick from Christoffer Nogueira.

"The guys played really good tonight," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "I liked everyone's effort to get that result. Mary is a tough place to play."

Zaccagnini's goal, his first of the year, came from five yards out on a cross from Marcus Tinsley (Fr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer).

WWU took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, Dan Anderson (Jr., Sandpoint, ID) finding the net from 10 yards out. It was his second goal in as many games.

Kurtis Pederson (Jr., Puyallup/Bellarmine Prep) was credited with an assist.

U-Mary had big advantages in both shots, 14-7, and corner kicks, 6-0.

WWU, which now holds a 6-1-1 series advantage over U-Mary, travels to South Dakota Mines on Saturday, Oct. 11 (7 p.m.).
