BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Tye Hastings (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson) and Matt Temple (Jr., Beaverton, OR) each scored a pair of goals in their final collegiate home game to help Western Washington University to a 6-1 Senior Night victory over University of Mary on Saturday, Nov. 1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
The triumph was the seventh in the last nine games for the Vikings, who improved to 9-7-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the GNAC.
Mary fell to 4-9-2 overall and 3-9-1 in conference play with its third consecutive loss.
Hastings opened the scoring with a diving header just 3:08 into the contest, and notched his second of the game, and seventh on the season, by banging in a rebound in the 59th minute.
Temple, a junior in eligibility who is completing his career and graduating this spring, scored after finishing off a Chad Radulovich (So., San Ramon, CA/California) in the 34th minute, and then weaved his way through the penalty area to score from eight yards in the 54th minute.
Another graduating senior, Gabrielle Zaccagnini (Olympia/Capital) scored in the 33rd minute, and freshman Drew Barker (Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) wrapped up the WWU scoring, notching his first career goal with 2:33 remaining.
"It was a great Senior Night," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "We had three of them get at least a point. Our finishing was really good tonight, and I was happy with the overall performance."
Jonathan Sellars scored the lone Marauder goal, heading in a Christoffer Nogueira corner in the 86th minute.
The Vikings had a narrow 16-14 edge in shot attempts, but put 10 on target to just two for Mary.
The six-goal outburst was the most for WWU since scoring seven against Northwest Nazarene in 2010. Radulovich had three assists just two days after scoring two goals in a 4-0 victory over South Dakota Mines.
A total of six Vikings played in their final home game. Along with Hastings, Temple and Zaccagnini, the others were Pat Cole (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome), goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Sr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian), and Caden Sowers (Sr., Ferndale).
WWU concludes its season with a GNAC contest at Simon Fraser on Sat., Nov. 8. (7 p.m.).
