BURNABY, B.C. - Simon Fraser University scored a pair of goals in the second half to claim a 2-0 victory over Western Washington University on Saturday, Nov.8, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Terry Fox Field on the SFU campus.
The Vikings, No.8 in this week's NCAA Division II West Region rating, completed the season 9-8-1 overall and 7-6-1 in conference play, winning seven of their last 10 games. The defeat eliminated WWU from any hope of a national tournament berth.
SFU, No.6 in the region, improved to 11-4-2 overall and 9-3-2 in the GNAC with its sixth consecutive victory.
After a scoreless first half that included just one on-target shot, that by SFU, the Clan reached the scoreboard just four minutes into the second half, as Jovan Blagojevic scored his 18th goal of the year, finishing off a cross from Alex Rowley.
Ryan Dhillon notched an insurance goal in the 67th minute, scoring after forcing a turnover deep in the WWU end.
SFU had a 24-3 advantage in shots, including a 16-1 margin after halftime.
Five Vikings played in their final collegiate soccer game - forward Tye Hastings (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson), midfielder Gabrielle Zaccagnini (Sr., Olympia/Capital), midfielder Matt Temple (Jr., Beaverton, OR), defender Pat Cole (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) and goalkeeper Keegan Rogers (Sr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian).
Rogers had five saves for WWU.
