BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Tye Hastings (Sr., Mill Creek/Jackson) scored the lone goal and Keegan Rogers (Sr., Portland, OR/Portland Christian) made five saves to earn the shutout as Western Washington University defeated Notre Dame de Namur University, 1-0, on Monday night in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings improved to 2-2-0 overall while playing the second of five consecutive home contests. They lost the opener 2-1 in overtime to Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
NDNU fell to 1-3-0 despite having a 14-8 advantage in shot attempts.
Hastings scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute. Gabriele Zaccagnini (Sr., Olympia/Capital) appeared trapped deep in the right corner, but found room to drive a cross into the penalty area, and Hastings converted it with a right-footed volley from seven yards out.
Hastings has both WWU game winners this season, also scoring in a 1-0 victory at UC San Diego, and has five in his career.
But the goal would not have been enough except for the efforts of Rogers at the other end. Rogers saved an Oscar Herrera penalty kick barely two minutes before the Hastings goal, diving to his right to push the ball wide of the post. He then preserved the victory in the 85th minute, smothering an Alex Guillen-Torres effort from six yards out.
It was the 14th career shutout for Rogers, which is the second-most in school history and just four short of the school record.
"We played a lot of guys, and everyone worked very hard," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We stuck to the defensive plan, and we also created chances offensively. We're getting better every day, and we're ready to start conference play."
The Vikings entertain nationally No.2-ranked Simon Fraser on Saturday, Sept. 20 (7 p.m.). The contest will be their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener.
