BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Leading by 12 strokes after shooting 23-under par over the first 36 holes, the University of British Columbia is in good position to defend its title at the 43rd Annual Western Washington University Invitational Men's Golf Tournament following first-day play Monday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Final-round action Tuesday begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

The Thunderbirds shot the day's best round of 15-under 273 in the afternoon after shooting 280 in the morning. They were led by Evan Holmes and Conner Kozak, who are one-two in medalist play at 10-under 134 (68-66) and 9-under 135 (65-70), respectively. Scott Secord is tied for ninth at 142 (73-69) and Jake Wood is tied for 15th at 143 (75-68).

Host WWU is 5-under at 571 after rounds of 282 and 289. Cal State Stanislaus is second at 11-under 565 (285-280) and Simon Fraser is third at 9-under 567 (281-286). Dixie State was fifth at 1-under 575 (289-286) in the 11-team field.

"There was some good play today," said WWU coach Luke Bennett. "The conditions were very good and you could definitely score today and they did."

"All of our guys battled. I'm hoping that we can bounce back and make a few more putts tomorrow."

WWU was led by Anthony Allen (So., Arlington), who is fourth individually at 4-under 140 (71-69). Four of his first five rounds this season have been under par and the other even. He tied for medalist honors in the Vikings' six-stroke win at the Saint Martin's Invitational last Friday and Saturday.

"Once again, Anthony played rock solid," Bennett said. "He just isn't making any mistakes."

WWU's Kyle Schrader (Sr., Olympia/Tumwater) is tied for 15th at 143 (68-75), Mark Strickland (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) is tied for 18th at 144 (71-73) and Brennan Emory (So., Mount Vernon) is tied for 22nd at 145 (73-72).

Kyle Lindor (So., Woodinville) paced the Vikings' "B" team. He is tied for ninth after shooting 143 (68-75).

Michael Mencassy, playing for Cal State Stanislaus, is third in the medalist standings at 8-under 136 (69-67).
