Sept. 19, 2015 Box Score
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Jr., Mount Vernon) had eight saves, including one on a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation, helping Western Washington University earn a 2-2 draw with Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday, Sept. 19, at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
Forward Jose Castillo (Fr., Bellevue/Interlake) and Brady Ulen (Jr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Post Falls) scored for the Vikings, who are now 2-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
SFU is now 1-1-2 and 0-0-1.
"I tell the guys that all I ask is that they give all they have physically and follow the game plan," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "For most of the game, we did that, so even though we don't want a tie, I'm pleased with the performance. Simon Fraser is a very good team."
Castillo gave WWU a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, scoring his first career goal from 15 yards out after a long ball from Eleazar Galvan (Jr., Chelan). But SFU equalized just 58 seconds before halftime, as Adam Jones took a pass from Ryan Dhillon and scored through traffic from a tight angle to the right of goal.
The Vikings regained the lead less than three minutes into the second half. After hard work by Adam Talley (Jr., Newman Lake/East Valley) to run down the ball in the left corner and earn a foul, Ulen headed in a free kick from Jeremy Wentzel (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway).
But with just 10 minutes left, the Clan leveled the score again, as a short pass by Mateo Espinosa put Mamadi Camara behind the Viking defense to slot home from 10 yards.
SFU nearly won the game in the final minute of regulation, when Adam Jones was fouled just inside the left edge of the penalty area. But Visten sprawled to his left to punch the Kyle Jones penalty kick around the post, forcing the game to overtime.
Visten also had two saves in the first half of overtime, the best when he stopped Camara from point blank range.
"Visten had another big time save (on the penalty)," Brisbon said. "He's keeping us alive."
SFU had advantages of 18-12 in shots and 13-2 in corner kicks.
WWU remains undefeated at home (1-0-2) this season and is 1-1-2 in its last four meetings with SFU.
The Vikings are at Montana State University Billings on Thursday, Sept. 24 (1:30 p.m. MT) for a GNAC counter.
