BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's Chris Hatch (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) is in a two-way tie for third in medalist play, one stroke behind the co-leaders, and the Vikings are fourth in the team standing after first-day play Monday, Sept. 21, at the 44th Annual Viking Men's Golf Invitational Tournament being played at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club.

The third and final round takes place Tuesday, Sept. 22, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Hatch shot a 3-under par 141 (69-72) for the first 36 holes and is tied with Northwest Nazarene's Keynan Fanslow (70-71). Tied for the lead at 4-under 140 are two Dixie State players -- Andrew Chu (69-71) and Kenny You (71-69).

Dixie State tops the 12-team field at 6-under 570 with rounds of 289 and 281. Cal Baptist is second, seven strokes behind at 577 (287-290) and Simon Fraser is third at 578 (289-289). British Columbia, which has won the last two WWU tourneys, is tied for sixth at 285 (293-292).

"We didn't capitalize on some opportunities today and lost some shots down the stretch," said third-year WWU head coach Luke Bennett, "but overall there were more good things than bad. So, we need to come out tomorrow and play this golf course without overthinking it because they know it so well."

The Vikings' Cody Roth (Fr., Bellingham) is in a four-way tie for eighth at 143 (69-74).

"Chris (Hatch) played solid all day, showing his leadership role in that regard," Bennett said, "and the future is very bright for Cody (Roth). This is a course that he is very comfortable with and he did a lot of good things today."
