BELLINGHAM, Wash. - For the second time in three rounds, Western Washington University shot even par 288, moving up one spot to place third at the 44th Annual Viking Men's Golf Invitational Tournament, which ended Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
The Vikings finished with a 54-hole score of 868. Dixie State paced the 12-team field at 7-under 857 (287), followed by Simon Fraser at 867 (289).
WWU was led by Chris Hatch (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak), who tied for fifth at 3-under 213 (72), one of 10 players to finish in red numbers.
The Vikings' Jeffrey Marcum (Jr., Richland), a transfer from South Mountain CC (Ari.), placed 10th at 1-under 215 (70). Cody Roth (Fr., Bellingham) finished in a four-way tie for 11th at even par 216 (73), and Anthony Allen (Jr., Arlington) tied for 17th at 218 (70). Both Marcum and Allen were playing as individuals.
"I was very pleased with how they played today," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett. "A couple of them got off to tough starts, but they all battled back. It could have been a better round for them, but it still was a great tournament.
"Four over for three rounds is always going to be a pretty solid score, and shooting even par twice, both in the first round and the final round, I'm always happy with that."
Dixie State's Andrew Chu took medalist honors at 6-under 210 (70). That was one stroke better than teammate Kenny You (71) and Simon Fraser's Chris Crisologo (68), who tied for second. Placing fourth at 4-under 212 (70) was Saint Martin's Ryan Pickthorn).
WWU next competes at the Western New Mexico University Regional Preview on Sept. 28-29 at Las Cruces, N.M.
