Western Washington University gave up an early goal and it proved costly as it fell 1-0 to Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Thursday, Sept. 24, at Yellowjacket Field on the MSUB campus.
The Vikings dropped to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
MSUB, which improved to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in GNAC action, scored in the third minute as Ricardo Palomino took a through ball from Julian Toenges and found the net from eight yards.
"At times today we were not a very good soccer team," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "If we're going to improve this season, we're going to have to stop giving up early goals. Both of our losses have been in those situations, so we need to be sharper."
WWU's best opportunity came in the 88th minute when Yellowjacket goalkeeper Tom Lohmann made an outstanding save on a shot in the box off the foot of Sawyer Preston (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake).
"The second half we played a lot better," Brisbon said. "We created some shots and a couple of scoring chances. We probably should have scored, but we didn't. Montana State Billings was very organized and didn't attack that much after they got the goal, so it was very difficult to break out."
WWU had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, but was outshot 12-9.
The Vikings are at University of Mary for a GNAC counter on Saturday, Sept. 26 (8 p.m. CT).
