Sept. 26, 2015

Box Score

BISMARCK, N.D. - Midfielder Luke Olney (So., Enumclaw) had two assists as Western Washington University scored a season-high three goals in a 3-1 victory over University of Mary on Saturday, Sept. 26, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at MDU Resources Community Bowl.

The Vikings, who were 0-2-1 in their last three games, improved to 3-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.

Mary fell to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in GNAC action.

"I felt that this was the best game we've played all year, maybe two years," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "They were really good today."

"I was very impressed with the leadership overall by everybody. Whoever was on the field did a great job of dealing with adversity and picking each another up, leading by example and sticking to the game plan that we had."

WWU opened the scoring midway through the first half with two goals in a span of 1:39. Adam Talley (Jr., Newman Lake/East Valley) found the upper right corner of the net off an assist by Olney in the 19th minute, and Kurtis Pederson (Sr., Puyallup/Bellarmine Prep) scored his first goal of the campaign in the 21st minute with Jeremy Wentzel (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) receiving an assist.

Mary cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 36th minute as Jonathan Sellers headed in a free kick by Aaron Brennan.

Eleazar Galvan (Jr., Chelan) gave the Vikings a 3-1 advantage in the 54th minute, scoring on a bicycle kick as Olney picked up his second assist.

The assists were the first of the season for Olney, who had eight, two off the school record, as a freshman last year.

WWU goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Jr., Mount Vernon) made 10 saves in the contest.

The win was the sixth straight for WWU in its series with the Marauders. The Vikings hold an 8-1-1 advantage overall over Mary.

WWU entertains Seattle Pacific University in a GNAC counter on Thursday, Oct. 1 (7 p.m.).
