LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Four Western Washington University players placed among the top 25 in medalist play as the Vikings tied for sixth place, just five strokes out of first, among 24 teams at the Western New Mexico University NCAA II Regional Preview Men's Golf Tournament which ended Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the University Golf Course.
The Vikings shot a final-round 2-over par 286 for a 36-hole total of 576 to tie with Colorado Christian (281).
Cal State University Monterey Bay took the team title at 571 (286), one stroke better than Chico State (280), with host WNMU third at 574 (292). Sonoma State (288) and Cal Baptist (285) tied for fourth at 575.
"We were right there and finished ahead of quite a few nationally ranked teams ," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett (3rd year). "We're definitely improving with each tournament."
Chris Hatch (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 13th at 143 (73) to lead the Vikings. Cody Roth (Fr., Bellingham) (70) and Jeffrey Marcum (Jr., Richland) (71) each tied for 17th at 144, and Brett Johnson (72) (Jr., Ridgefield) tied for 25th at 145. Tying for 83rd at 152 (77) was Michael Butler (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline).
Taking medalist honors was CSUMB's Carr Vernon at 6-under 136 (69). That was one stroke better than Cameron's Daniel Nielsen (71).
WWU competes in the Chico State Invitational on Oct. 5-6.
