BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Adam Talley (Jr., Newman Lake/East Valley) scored early and Eleazar Galvan (Jr., Chelan) added a late goal as Western Washington University defeated UC San Diego, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer contest Saturday, Sept. 5, at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
WWU, which tied 1-1 with NCAA Division II nationally No.6-ranked Cal State L.A. on Thursday, improved to 1-0-1.
UCSD fell to 0-1-1.
Talley, a transfer from North Idaho JC, scored in the 12th minute, taking a long ball from Kurtis Pederson (Sr., Puyallup/Bellarmine Prep) and finishing into the far post from 10 yards out.
Although UCSD applied periods of sustained pressure in the second half, the Vikings didn't allow a shot on target after halftime, and just one for the game. The Tritons final good chance to tie came with just under two minutes remaining, when Zachary Lagotta stepped into a loose ball just outside the penalty area, but his low blast was blocked by Pederson just above the six-yard box.
Barely 30 seconds later, the Vikings put the game out of reach. After a long clearance, Talley battled to hold the ball, finally feeding Jeremy Wentzel (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway), who played a short ball into the penalty area where Galvan beat a defender to the ball and slotted it into the goal from eight yards.
"We weren't as sharp as we were on Thursday," said WWU coach Greg Brisbon. "It's tough to play two games with only one day of rest. But I'm happy to win the game. That's a game that a year ago would have been a tie or a loss."
UCSD had a 10-9 edge in shot attempts, but WWU goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Jr., Mount Vernon) had to make just one save in earning his first shutout.
"Brady Ulen (Jr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Post Falls) played well in the back, and Tyler was solid," Brisbon said. "He didn't have a lot to do, but he stayed focused and got it done."
The unbeaten week marked the first time the Vikings have opened a season unbeaten in their first two games since 2007, and both contests came against West Region opponents, making the results important for their hopes of reaching the NCAA DII National Tournament.
WWU faces another West Region opponent on Thursday, Sept. 10 (7 p.m.), visiting Cal State East Bay.
