SEASIDE, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's golf team is in 5th place out of 16 teams at the Otter Fall Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at the Bayonet Golf Club.
The Vikings completed the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 13-over-par 589, 14 strokes back of team leader Nova Southeastern (-1, 575). WWU is just four strikes back of fourth-place Cal State East Bay (+9, 585) and seven strokes back of third-place Cal State Monterey Bay (+6, 582).
"Today was a grind from the beginning to the end for the guys," said head coach Luke Bennett. "The course is one that demands your attention on every shot. The guys battled all day long, but we got a little fatigued at the end and gave a few strokes away down the stretch. Brett (Johnson) and Jeff (Marcum) showed great patience out there today."
Western senior Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA) continued his excellent start to the 2016-17 season posting consecutive rounds of even-par 144 on the par 72 layout. Johnson recorded 23 pars and 5 birdies in his 36 holes, and recorded an eagle on the 18th hole in the second round. Johnson is tied for 9th place in the 86-player field and will be seeking his fourth top 20 finish in five starts this fall when he tees off for the final 18 holes tomorrow.
Seniors Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA) and Chris Hatch (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) are tied for 24th place at 4-over-par (148) through the first two rounds.
Simon Fraser's Chris Crisologo is at 7-under-par (69-68=137) through the first two rounds to hold a 2-shot advantage in the race for individual medalist honors. A total of 12 players finished the first 36 holes at par or better.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final round beginning with a shotgun start at 8:15 am.
