CHICO, Calif. - The Western Washington University men's golf team stands in a tie for 5th place after the first two rounds of the Chico State InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic played Monday at Butte Creek Country Club.

The Vikings finished the first round in the lead after a 3-over-par 291 in the morning 18, but slipped into a tie for 5th place with a 9-over-par 300 in the second round of the 16-team field. Western is just three shots back of third-place Colorado School of Mines (+12, 584), while tournament host Chico State holds the lead heading into Tuesday's final round at 5-over-par (581).

"I was really pleased with how we played all day long, we just didn't score as well in the afternoon round," said head coach Luke Bennett. "All around it was a good team effort in a really tightly-packed field. We need to focus on what we did well today and take that into tomorrow's final round."

Seniors Brett Johnson (Ridgefield, WA) and Jeffrey Marcum (Richland, WA) carried the Vikings with each recording a 36-hole score of 2-over-par 146, good for a tie for 8th place in the 92-player field. Freshmen Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) is at 3-over-par 147 (T14th) and Jack Shea (Sequim, WA) is at 8-over-par (T50th) after making their collegiate debuts.

The Vikings got off to a scorching start leading the 16-team field after the first 18 holes at 3-over-par (291). Johnson finished the first round tied for 4th with a 1-under-par round of 71, carding five birdies and four bogeys. He opened his round (hole 6) with birdies on three of the first four holes, and finished his round with consecutive birdies to record his fourth round of par or better so far this season.

Marcus Brown of Simon Fraser (72-70) and Nic Beno (71-71) of Colorado School of Mines are tied individual medalist honors at 2-over-par 142.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final round beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 am.
