SEATTLE, Wash. - For the second time in less than two weeks, Western Washington and Seattle Pacific played to a double-overtime tie with Thursday night's 1-1 draw at Interbay Stadium in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
"I thought it was a pretty even game. Both teams created good chances to score and each of us just got one (goal) tonight," said head coach Greg Brisbon. "SPU could have had a couple, we could have had a couple, and both keepers made huge saves in the second half. It shows you the conference is really strong and two good programs battling it out."
The Vikings (4-2-3, 1-1-3) took the lead early in the second half when freshman Nick Phillips (Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner) scored from the center of the box with an eight yard shot at 49:55. A pair of quick passes set up the score with Jose Castillo (So., Bellevue, WA/Interlake) feeding Wesley Stark (Jr., Snohomish, WA) who relayed it to Phillips from the right side of the box.
SPU answered 48 seconds later when Jess Cayetano gathered a loose ball in the top left side of the box and lashed a low, 16-yard drive just inside the right post at 50:43.
The two teams matched each other stride-for-stride the rest of the way resulting in the tie. Western had a barrage of shots late in the second overtime from Luke Olney (107:49), Eleazar Galvan (108:23) and Castillo (108:39), with SPU goalie Cody Lang coming up with a pair of saves.
WWU junior goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Mount Vernon, WA/Skagit Valley College) made 4 saves in the game.
"I think both teams adjusted well from the first game," added Brisbon. "I'm happy with my guys. They worked super hard and never gave up and fixed their mistakes that they made. They gave it their all and left it on the field. Unfortunately we couldn't get one in the net but we will get some rest and give Northwest Nazarene a good match on Saturday."
WWU continues its road schedule with a trip to Idaho this weekend. The Vikings will oppose Northwest Nazarene at 3 pm (MT) on Saturday.
