NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Washington University men's soccer team held a 26-10 advantage in shots, but it wasn't enough in a 1-0 double overtime loss against Northwest Nazarene Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at Finkbeiner Park.
The Vikings also had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn't slip a shot past NNU goalkeeper Ryan Foo (10 saves) to fall to 4-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in GNAC play. NNU improves to 5-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.
"I am kind of in shock that we didn't win this game," said head coach Greg Brisbon. "We are doing a good job creating our chances, but when we don't finish we continue to let teams hang around and these things happen."
Western's chances included missed penalty kick by junior midfielder Luke Olney (Enumclaw, WA) that was saved by Foo in the 69th minute and two shots by senior Eleazar Galvan (Chelan, WA/Skagit Valley College) that were saved by Foo in overtime. The Vikings also had a goal by Olney called back in the 59th minute due to an offside call.
The Crusaders scored the golden goal one minute into the second overtime when Michael Mollay slid a ball past junior goalkeeper Tyler Visten (Mount Vernon, WA/Skagit Valley College) inside the left post.
The Vikings have now played four consecutive games that have gone into double overtime, recording a 1-1-2 record during this stretch.
WWU continues its stretch of four consecutive road games next week traveling to Montana State Billings on Thursday (3:30 pm MT) and crosses the border to face Simon Fraser on Saturday in Burnaby (7 pm).
